Explosion Safety

Explosion Safety

Kiwa delivers certification services in the field of explosion safety. Almost all countries have legislation for explosion safety. These regulations ensure safe working conditions in the industry but also ensure safety for products, systems, components to be used in a potentially explosive atmosphere. In Europe these two areas are regulated by the ATEX Directives. ATEX is an abbreviation form the French title of the European ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU). Appareils et systèmes de protection pour les atmosphères explosibles. Today we simply use the word ATEX  to refer to one of the following European Directives:

  • the ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) Equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres;
  • the ATEX 137 workplace directive 99/92/EC, Minimum requirements for improving the safety and health protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres.

For manufacturers acting on the global market, the international IECEx scheme is important as well. Kiwa certification services are often a combination of IECEx and the ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU).
